*Sigh* Demon are generally a great ISP, doing 'proper' broadband Internet connectivity, with no stupid bandwidth limits, and free helpdesk support, and static IP addresses. They cost a little more, but I think the extra is worth it. Sadly, they do seem to have a bit of a blindspot with their mail servers. Whichever server my email lives on at the moment is totally dead, and has been since about 17:30 yesterday (or thereabouts). So, any emails sent since then haven't reached me. If you do need to email me something, my hotmail address is available.

I used to love Demon and I still have a dial up account with them (as a back up and for remote access) but since their take over by Scottish Power and then Thus they have been going down hill.

I actually went to Mailbox for my service. Like Demon you get a fixed IP and no bandwidth issues. They are also quite happy for you to run servers and wotnot. You also get a human on the end of tech support who knows Linux. In fact Jason's great and in the early days we often just chatted about how to set things up.

Why don't you get yourself a domain, get the MX records set up properly and run your own mail server. That's what we do. The only calamity we get is when the connection goes.

I was going to suggest the same thing (it's what I do) but actually doing it well (ie better than your ISP would) does require a fair amount of effort, knowledge and at least some expense...

I like to think I get a far better service than I could buy for the same money, and it's probably true, but if I had to factor in the cost of my time I'm rather less concinved it would be a cost-effective proposition. (Although it would still give me far more control, of course -- just not at a price I could justify.)

I cannot change my gas or electricity provider without it going INSANELY wrong in a kind of ludicrous, mental, brain meltingly bizarre fashion.

Don't worry, I think that's considered normal in our wonderful, brave new deregulated utilities industry... :-)

Stop living in the stone age grandad and get a domain, they even come with webmail now so your fandango sonyfone wouldn't even need pop to send and receive email. I'm sure casio do a digi-watch..

I had about 2 hours downtime on demon mail yesterday but then it was back up and fine - though I really don't use it for anything other than receiving the latest penis enlargement offers. Thankfully I didn't miss any good deals on making my member enormous during those two hours of downtime.

I dropped our last .org as the nasty US registrars played silly buggers with us and sold the previous one out from under our feet. Stick with .uk domains they're easier to manage.

Don't say that! If I lost my .org account I'd be buggered. However, the likelyhood of some yank wanting 'gallowgate.org' is fairly small I think :)
