Last night I went round to Phil and Anna's (WANOLJ) to see the kittens their cat has given birth to. They're just over a week old, and hugely cute. I've never seen kittens this young before, with their eyes only just opening. When Anna picked one up to show it to us it squeaked most pathetically, and the mother got up all concerned to retrieve it. She attempted to do that "scruff of the neck" thing, but it was the first time she had done it (apparently) and she wasn't very good at it. Hopefully she'll get better!
The mother is pedigree, and the kittens were supposed to be too, but the mother (Cobweb) escaped whilst in season, and it appears a local tom is the father instead. So the kittens are good quality "British Domestics" :-)

It is funny when the mothers don't reall yknow what they're doing. Nermal was so small that her attempts to carry her kittens were always going to be somewhat awkward, but on top of that it was obvious that she hadn't a clue, bless.

Hmph... pesky linnean system. Spiritually, cats are rodents even if ancestrally they are not.

Cats also scurry around in muck and would live off rubbish if people didn't feed them. When people feed rodents they live off that instead of rubbish.

Cats are not delicate creatures, they're quite often great tubby lumps.

Rodents also kill and eat small life forms for nutrition.

Cat to human diseases are actually not uncommon.

Isn't there an estimate that around one in 3 of the population has toxoplasmosis? (Slow brain today, bah, I think that's what it's called.) Causes cysts on the brain, caught by contact with cat faeces. It's a parasite that's usually caught by rats, and it makes them (and us) react slower, but behave more recklessly and promiscuously. Makes me think there should be free testing for people out on Parliament St and Micklegate on a Saturday night...
