A shot for the pain at hand
Of bad backs and The Wendy House.
Last Monday I finally went to see the doctor about my back. It's been niggling me for quite a long time (mebbe two years). However, it had crept up on me very slowly and I wasn't really conscious of any significant problem. After my massage in early January I was *completely* free of pain for a few days, and that brought it home to me that there really was something wrong there. It's not a really bad pain. It's just always there, and annoyong.
It doesn't seem to be anything really complex though. Just degeneration of the muscles in my lower back. Probably nothing more than a side effect of being sat on my lardy arse at work for 14 years. The doctor has recommended a course of physiotherapy, which I can claim on my health insurance, so I need to sort that out.
In the meantime, it appears 'light' exercise is to be undertaken: running, swimming, walking, etc. NO HEAVY LIFTING. I'm to move around as much as possible. This isn't something that's going to benefit from rest - I need to build the muscles up by using them gently.
The last week has been interesting at work. I'm back to my first love: processing incoming data feeds and sticking them into databases. It's something I'm good at, and also something where I'm the expert. Lots more of that over the next few weeks.
Saturday morning I met
resyk for a little lads shopping trip (he was buying clothes). We went to a well known fast food establishment, and contrary to what usually happens with him were were served quickly, accurately and efficiently.
Saturday night was The Wendy House. There were lots of interesting and beautiful people there. Memorable events include:
* My head being used as a 'cooling device' by
mofette.
meltie seemed to like a freshly shaved head too.
* My friend Jaqi (WINOLJ) managing to make it out for the first time in months. She looked great in her tight black high heeled boots. Sadly, she hadn't quite considered the full effect of doing this when she already had torn ankle ligaments. She had to leave early in pain :-(
*
owdbetts appearing in his new clothes. Him then being *cough* a little the worse for wear on the way home and asking many daft questions: "are we in York?", "is this where Kriss lives?" :-)
* Also talking to
steer,
miss_dark,
echo_echo, Derek and Rebeccah (WANOLJ). I waved at
cyberspice but we didn't get chance to talk.
* Danced a lot with
miss_wonderly.
*
mistressmalaise having a bit of a strange time and leaving early.
* Leaning against the balcony and looking out of the assembled hoards. For a few minutes, I just let my eyes flow across the many interesting fem forms in eye-catching clothing... One bloke was getting a free "lap dance" from a rather cute fem who seemed to be falling out of her clothes. I assume they knew each other...
* Being about to introduce
miss_dark's friend Ilona to Derek (WINOLJ), and noticing that they looked stunned to see each other. They knew each other from the 90s but hadn't seen each other for five years.
* Seeing "grumpy cybergoth" (of whom more anon).
* The whole place seeming astonishingly busy for a February night.
* Various people recognising the molecule on my t-shirt as being caffeine. I would ask them if they were a chemist. The answer was always "no, I'm a geek". Says something about my chosen profession.
One interesting aspect flowed from the back problem. Dancing about in bleepy roomed turned out to feel really good, so I did more of that than I usually do. By the end of the evening I even felt like I quite fancied some glowsticks. I'm on a slippery slope here, aren't I? :-)
On returning from The Wendy House at 04:00, I spent a few minutes looking at the stars. A winter sky isn't something I've seen often at 04:00, and it was strange to see Cygnus (a summer constellation, as far as I am concerned) in the 'wrong' part of the sky. It seems to be the case that all the clear nights recently have coincided with me not being in the best state to do astronomy.
I crashed out, but then acquired "disrupted sleep patterns". This resulted in me going to bed last night at 22:00, but then waking up at 03:45 convinced it was time to get up. Oh dear. I slept a little later, and actually seem OK today (after a couple of mugs of Hot Lava Java).
One other aspect flows from the back problem. Sitting on my arse writing LJ entries isn't a good idea. I need to move around more. Not quite sure how this will work out. I use the train to get to work at the moment, so I can write some there on my laptop. Comments on other people's LJs are OK - I often do that for a few minutes distraction during my working day. So, my posts may get even more infrequent.

Did you know taht if you make that double strength and drink a litre of that it makes you feel a bit queasy. Well it did for me anyway. I've not touched it since.

Mark E Smith, Totally Wired. (Actually about the Wigan Casino Northern Soul-boy speed freaks, but whatever.... ;))

Ah, but you're not the hardened caffeine user I am.
Re:

I should challenge you to a coffee drinking competition, but I'm sure the results would be *very* unhealthy! :-)

I was generally wired from Monday to Friday, and spending most of the weekend awake, for a few years!

And some pilates should sort you out more permanently.

Yeh, I've seen those before. An interesting idea.

Yeh, lots of people have suggested this. I'll get round to it. It took me a couple of years to get to the doctor's.
A few days of forcing myself to move around a lot more seems to have helped a lot though.
And yes, I know I need to "stand/sit up straight". :-)
