I finally finished a mammoth piece of work yesterday.
For months (going back to September 2003) I've been responsible for a lot of the testing of a significant new Orange product we've been working on in Leeds. Yesterday I finished the final set of tests and breathed a sigh of relief. Testing isn't something I really like doing. I was allocated to it more on the basis that I was a warm body with not much else on (work wise) that couldn't wait for a bit. Having said that, I am pretty good at testing. I have been called "pedantic" once or twice over the years :-) This is considered a good attribute in someone who is testing software. I think the problem I have with it is that having been a developer for so long, I realise just how much work goes into software. I feel their pain when I have to go to see a developer with a list of defects...

I'll say what the product is when it launches in a few weeks time. Corporates get funny about what you say in public, although it would be bizarre to hassle me for saying "Orange allocated someone to spend months testing their new product really carefully" :-) It's always nice when we roll out a working product to customers, and real people out there in mobile land can get stuff I've worked on.

Oddly, this might mean I comment *less* on LJ. When I was working on this, LJ was a useful distraction from work I didn't really like. Now, I'm back to doing my favourite thing on Earth: writing big parsers in Perl to process dubious incoming news and data feeds and stick them into our databases. Lovely!
