Inspired by
childeric's comments on my previous entry about the greatness of rock chicks in the late 80s/early 90s, I wandered off to my photo collection to see what I could find. I can never be bothered with clever thumbnail/high-res pages, so the link below takes you to one page with about 330ks worth of pictures on it, of people with long hair, tight trousers and short skirts. Only the women are wearing short skirts - this is the 80s metal scene, remember :-)

Pete looks so young. And so Eldritch.
Do I know the girl sitting next to you where you're wearing the Hysteria t-shirt? She looks familiar. Would she have been in Rock Soc in my day?

There certainly was. She got it cut eventually due to the sheer maintenance effort it required. Getting glammed up for going out was OK, but she had to spend half an hour every workday morning 'taming' it. She's a lot happier with her shorter, straighter hair - which she gets *me* to straighten so now it's *me* doing the maintenance :-)

That's Kim Long, who wasn't really a Rock Soc person, but lived opposite me in the first year and we became good friends. She did a 4 year MEng in 'tronics so she graduated in 1991.

Though true...80's/90's rock chicks have a lot to answer for. Short tight skirts, thigh length boots, biker jackets, big hair and OTT makeup. I knew I wanted to be a rock star after going to see Guns n Roses...they attracted some seriously nice 'rock chicks' and my life, as they say, has never been the same since. :)

Yeh, they are pretty funny. But I look on them with a certain fondness. We all looked OK "for the time". Those were the fashions and appearances of that era, at least in that sub-culture.
Far worse, IMHO, would have been to have been dressed by our mothers in "nice clothes". :-)

I spent far too much time enjoying myself in those days.. I don't seem to have many photographs!
However, you've prompted me to go have another looksy...

I know what you mean! We discussed the many great nights out at LTs in Scarborough, of which I have precisely zero pictures.
Fortunately, the (mostly digital) photographic record of the current era is much more widespread and will hopefully always be available. I am contemplating a simple, "easily fits in a pocket" digital camera, so that when we're talking about "early 21st century cyber-goth babes" in 10 years time I'll have some pictures of them! :-)

(I had my digital camera stolen for a while, so I had to give up my photo-taking for a while... but I've just got a new one for Xmas... so watch out!)

No, the shirt I wore in November was a Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction t-shirt. It's of similar vintage to the Def Leppard shirt, but the sleeve cutting off wasn't so severe and it, er, gapes less at the side. My 1988 body was a lot less blobby compared to my 2003 body. :-)
The Def Leppard shirt is in the rag bag in the garage. One day I'll clean my motorbike with it!
