I was at York University in the late 80s. I needed to buy some condoms, so I went into the toilets near the porter's lodge in Vanbrugh college. I put my quid in, pulled the tray out, and there was nothing there! Now, this had happened to me before and I had always been a little too timid to do anything about it. "Not this time" I thought. I can be a mature 80s man and sort this out!
I went over to the porter's lodge and explained the machine had eaten my money and not vended the goods. He told me to go to the college secretary's office and explain this. So off I went. Eek! It's a woman. In her 40s. I'm finding this a little more intimidating now. I explain the situation (she looks a little stunned - I don't think this has happened very often before). She agrees that the next time someone comes to refill the machine, she will retrieve my pound from them then. She will send me a note that she's got it and I can go and fetch it from her then. This seems reasonable, and I leave.
The next day there is a note in my pigeon hole. Apparently she got the porter to take a look at the machine, and it was just stuck. He got a pack of three out for me, and they're now waiting at the porter's lodge!
I go back to the lodge, where a different porter is on duty. I explain that the college secretary has left a 'package' there for Vincent Loach. He wanders off and starts rummaging around. Suddenly he stops dead. He's transfixed by something on the shelf. He slowly reaches out and picks up a pack of condoms. It has a small yellow PostIt(tm) stuck to it, with my name written on it.
He slowly wanders back, looking at me, looking at the package, a look of pure puzzlement on his face. Why is the college secretary leaving packets of condoms in his lodge for undergraduates? Is there some arrangement here he wants to know about? He has no idea.
I didn't tell him. I thanked him for the package and went about my business.
I looked back as I left him, a stunned porter, trying to work out what had just happened. Always nice to get one over on the staff. :-)
