Spotted on the Bad Astronomer's blog, this book looks really interesting:

I always ended up with military lasers front and rear. I could never get the hang of side-mounted lasers.

I played on the Acorn Electron - I was old skool ;)
It was only years later I found out that there were no suns or thargoids in the Electron version. Many months of failed hunting and fuel scooping as a child were suddenly vindicated.
