Spotted on the Bad Astronomer's blog, this book looks really interesting:

Spaceship Handbook. 540 pages of both real and imagined spaceships from the last 75 years. Lust!

That link is to amazon.com 'cos a quick search of amazon UK and abebooks UK suggests copies in this country cost about £60! Hmmm. £30 plus shipping from the US... And xmas coming up ;-)

Ooooh. Sounds very like a book I have called "The Dream Machines" by Ron Miller which covers pretty much the same territory and is even bigger ;)

I never met anyone that could.

I loved Elite but it has left me with an extreme hatred of the Blue Danube. All those moments when the docking computer didn't quite work.

Ah, I still remember the day I got my first mission, the skies were bluer then y'know and...

Blue Danube? You obviously played one of those them ports and not the 'proper' version...

No it didn't and I had both the tape version (officially) and the disk version. I had a BBC because I had a paper round and saved up for it. I had a rule that I would only buy peripherals for it if I could make the money to buy them. I was a regular in Acorn User in the 80s.

No music, so far as I recall - maybe you watched 2001 around about then. I got sick of the Planets Suite as I used to play that in the background. I played on someone else's BBC, then waited bloody ages for it to come out on the ST, which turned out to be rubbish.

But of course :) And the enhanced missiles and energy bomb.

I played on the Acorn Electron - I was old skool ;)

It was only years later I found out that there were no suns or thargoids in the Electron version. Many months of failed hunting and fuel scooping as a child were suddenly vindicated.

I had a Beeb. I wasted my entire first year at Uni on the game.

I had the C64 version. And I had my computer under the desk with a curtain down the side to keep the light out. I stole loads of switches from my Dad's garage and glued them to the underside of my desk. It was exactly like being in the Millenium Falcon. Really.
