Uber-ultra-sad Trainspotting Incident
For the last few weeks Network Rail's all-over-yellow liveried class 86 overhead line testing locomotives have been in York station (86901 and 86902). Every time I see them I wonder if I 'spotted' them back in the late 70s when I was a serious train spotter. They were re-numbered at some point, and Wikipedia tells me they were originally 86253 and 86210.
Tonight I found my 1979 British Rail Locoshed Book. For those who don't know, this lists the loco number of every single active BR loco and multiple unit in use in that year. Trainspotters would underline each number when spotted, with other small marks as well ('c' for 'cabbed', etc.) There, on page 34, is 86253 - with underlining! I almost certainly spotted this at Birmingham New Street, where lots of electric locomotives passed through, back in 1979. I'm curiously satisfied by this...

Presumably they were a bit less colourful in those days. NR really do believe in FULL yellow ends. When I snapped these last week they were parked next to an MML 222 and a Central 158. It looked like a Hawkwind stage backdrop C1973.

I remember 86253 "The Manchester Guardian" from the early days of Ipswich to Liverpool Street services circa 1986 (when I restrated looking at trains when the line was electrified .. in those days it was in the inter city colours and remebering getting it for haulage down to London prior to doign the nightrider from Euston on my first ever Scottish trip so that will be a underline and a yellow highlight in the platform 5 of those days!
86210 "City Of Edinburgh" was amother i had for haulage whiles commuting from Stowmarket to Ipswich even though by then it was in the rail express systems red and grey livery as it was hired due a shortage of the correct inter city sector ones ..
trainspotter me no never!
