Theremin!

Quite to my surprise, Psydoll were playing Darklands on Saturday night when I arrived. I quite liked them, though they were a bit loud and intense and deafened me slightly in one ear. However, they did appear to be using a theremin onstage! I love theremins. It's the fantastic "1950s SF sound" they make. They *are* 'the future'. There was a small debate at work today as to whether or not it was a theremin though. It only had one antenna, and theremins are known to have two. As it was clearly "an instrument that you played by moving your hands around in an electromagnetic field", I figured it counted.

This lead to me looking around for pictures of theremins on images.google.com. Whilst doing so, I found perhaps one of the most astonishing, but utterly, utterly fantastic pictures I have ever seen. It's Not Safe For Work, and will simply reinforce every thought about me you've ever had, and after that buildup you can probably guess what it is, but if you're feeling brave, look here :-)

mmmm theremins. I played one a few months ago. Want!

I didn't click on the link because I'm on [livejournal.com profile] mistressdickens' laptop. She followed my browsings a few days ago, and look what happened - joined LJ! I think you would shock her... ;)

Arguably John Otway has low musical ability, but he's a whizz with his theramin.

I saw Psydoll last time they played Darklands and was very impressed. They sound better recorded than live, though I suspect that's more down to the acoustics of a pub in York rather than post-editing. You can download a few of their tracks off their website.

You really must see Man or Astro-man?. They are the future. Their set is played against a backdrop of old NASA films, 60s/70s computer adverts and little paeans to the US military-industrial complex and their music is sort of zonked space punk surf. With theremins. Sometimes with flaming theremins.

They are bloody, BLOODY good.

Should have paid more attention to the warning. Nearly threw up the pasta pesto I had for lunch upon opening the link.

Note to self: always heed Vin's warnings in the future.

Psydoll are about to arrive at our place in a short while so I will ask NEKOI to post an answer to your question....assuming I can figure out what the Japanese for theremin is ;)

it is a theremin-esques contraption, or an odd japanese handwarmer.

I asked NEKOI and she says it's not a proper theremin, just a cheap toy one :)

no link to theramins. I was trying to get back into second life & forgot my user name. Wondered if I'd commented it in your second life LJ but couldn't remeber what it was called to look.
