I had to go and hunt down a nasty Windows box, as I couldn't play it on my Mac. It would seem that Vin deliberately chose an Indeo 4.1 codec knowing full well that there is no implementation of it in OS X.

Er, no, not at all. It went more like "ooh, different codecs - I wonder which gives a good file size vs quality trade-off? <fiddle, fiddle> that one looks nicest."

Indeo 4.1 is a widely available one, but gives pretty poor compression compared to modern codecs. These days I tend to favour Xvid, though DivX is more popular, and there are assorted mpeg-4 codecs available.

I must admit, I know very little about "video codecs". I have this vague knowledge that they exist, and there are lots of them, and that they cause problems when you haven't got the right one. Sometimes I'll try to watch something and a page will tell me I haven't got the right codec, and it will try and download it for me. This invariably fails. To date, life has been too short to be arsed about video codecs. Perhaps this may change.

As someone who *does* know about codecs (I get paid to know) I would go for MPEG4 or H264.

Hmmmm. The Logitech program I was using didn't offer me either of those :-( Not that I intend to make a habit of filming animal impressions for general entertainment :-)

I should have added I go for vanilla MPEG4 and H264 because they are industry standards. DivX or Xvid which are pseudo MPEG4 are different enough to require their own forms of codec.
