Not chronological, more a set of thoughts in no particular order...

Halls of Residence Rooms
Went to the Dennis Bellamy halls to pick up my keys. Last time I was there was 1988, the day I discovered I had failed my first year at University, so interesting memories there. Ended up in the Macmillan Halls of Residence. Clearly, this hall was on top of some geothermal fault, and so the heat of the Earth's core filtered through the frame of the building. The floors were heated - in August. My room had two taps: hot and fucking hot. Meant I spent most of my time in there lying naked on the bed (oo-er missus).

The occupant of the room above had also decided that there room was 'party room'. At about 03:00 each morning a crowd would gather there and 'greatest hits of EBM' would be played. Generally Covenant and Apop. This was actually pretty mellow. If I was revising for finals I would have killed them, but dozing away to a the dull thud of Dead Stars at 04:00 was actually curiously relaxing.

People
Staying near to the 'York People': [livejournal.com profile] steer, [livejournal.com profile] miss_wonderly, [livejournal.com profile] childeric and Lisa (WINOLJ). [livejournal.com profile] gothgrr appeared on Sunday evening after a mammoth journey across the various transportation systems of Europe!
Following my numerous nasty comments about Steer's small organisation oversight condeming me to being Johnny No-Mates at the other end of campus, he ended up on the same corridor as me...
Got to talk to other people: [livejournal.com profile] cyberspice, [livejournal.com profile] sunflowerinrain, Howard of Bradford (WINOLJ?).
Meant to talk to [livejournal.com profile] echo_echo, [livejournal.com profile] ketlogic and [livejournal.com profile] jezebel_z, but never really managed it. Sorry, people. See you next year :-)

Food
Nice food at Cafe We're Not Naming. Food makes me a bit lethargic, so at events like this I load calories at lunch time, snooze a bit in the afternoon, then don't eat in the evenings. Worked out OK.

Transformations
I shaved my head completely on Saturday night. It worked in the cultural context. It felt spooky too. Although it went 'stubbly' again within a matter of hours. Women seem to prefer to stroke the 'zero cut', so I might not do it again. I felt it a curiously compelling experience though: cover your head in shaving foam, and take a razor to it. Cut of all the hair there, apart from your eyebrows. I felt oddly cleansed afterwards.

Drink
I must confuse people I don't see often. I say I don't drink, then they see me at things like Infest and Whitby where I drink loads! Ethanol is rarely my drug of choice, but I used it a fair bit at InFest. It worked particularly well on Friday, where two pints of Grolsch on an empty stomach after months of not drinking gave me a curiously happy, trippy glow. That and the loud repetitive beats and flashing lights were very pleasent. Saturday I switched to Vodka/Red Bull, which looks like wee but contains sugar, caffiene and ethanol and works on me nicely. The bar was lovely and cheap. The look on childeric's face after a round of three drinks came to a fiver was a joy to behold. He's from London.

Music
Tarantella Serpentine - interesting. I was still easing into the whole bleepy groove experience at this point, still finding all the glowing colours a bit overwhelming, but I quite enjoyed this.

scrap.edx - hmmmm. Two blokes making a noise hunched over their Commodore 64s. It didn't work for me.

cut.rate.box - I enjoyed loads more than I expected to.

Je$us Loves Amerika - I kinda saw them from a distance, and they vaguely worked for me.

Culture Kultur - Definite winners of "band I knew almost nothing about that I will endeavour to experience again" award for the weekend.

Seabound - Hmmm. Mixed feelings. They were OK. Perhaps I was looking forward to them 'too much', and they didn't quite meet my expectations. Perhaps the differences between the recorded/live versions of the songs weren't to my taste.

God Module - Er... I can't really remember them! Hang on ... big bloke bounced around a lot?

Football Interlude - On Sunday, rode up to Middlesbrough for proper Sunday Lunch courtesy of mother-in-law, and an afternoon watching Middlesbrough FC get thrashed 4-0 by Arsenal. :-( Only thing that kept me sane was ability to think "at least you'll see VNV Nation tonight" through most of match. This meant I missed SITD, who I wanted to see and have got rave reviews of people I know who saw them. Arrrgh.

VNV Nation - Bleeped mightily. Kept me sane after that stupidbloodyfootballteam. First time I had seen them live. Lots of jokey comments to the audience. Fantastic end to the weekend.

Nice food at Cafe We're Not Naming

Is there a particular reason that said cafe is shrouded in anonymous mystery? I don't particularly want to know what it's called (I can't see that it would be a practically handy piece of info) but I'm curious as to why I may not be told!

Because if we tell people about it everyone will be there next time and we won't be able to get a seat. I'm sure any of us will happily tell you offline though. :)

Oh I see - you devious bunch you! I very much doubt that I'd ever be in need of a place that sells a good breakfast in Bradford (perhaps that should read 'I hope I'd never be...' ;->) and I know roughly where it is from [livejournal.com profile] miss_wonderly so that probably gives me all the info I need!!
