It's now finally snowing here in Leeds.
Which is mildly problematic for me as I came to work on my motorbike. I might have to abandon it and go home on the train...

[My subject line comes from the five years I spent in Hull, where the local accent pronounces it this way. I recently discovered that this is known as goat fronting! To this day I pronounce snow as "sner" and giggle to myself.]

I read it as "goat frothing". But it could have been worse - it could have been "goat fluffing".

The Hull accent. A goat would be a "gert" in Hull. A popular cola is known as "kirk" there.

Remember Jim Briggs' accent? I think he was from somewhere right up in North Yorks, near the border with Cumbria. I remember him talking about the "nerd curd" once and taking some time to realise that he was talking about the "node code".

Really? I always thought the whole "kirk-a-curler", "where's the surp" elongated vowels was East Yorkshire only. Interesting...

TBH, I avoided Jim Briggs as much as I could. Argh! You've reminded me off when found a picture of him on the web. I nearly fell off my chair in horror, and I'm a regular reader of rotten.com!

In JSB's case it was probably because he was trying to sound 'posh' -- 'common' people in the rest of the north have very short vowels. ;)

Sweets are known as 'spice' in the North Derbyshire/Sheffield/Macclesfield area too - or at least they were 20 years ago when I was a lad...

Aw, that's great, I had forgotten some of the 'class' Hull inflections.

Most of the people I knew in Hull were, like me, "ex-pats" from other parts of the UK, but one friend was 100% Hull ("dragged up on Bransholme" as she used to say). Her accent is fantastic!

I don't know what you mean ;) Besides, none of the Cumbrians I know (and excluding the one who's really a Scouser) have an accent like that. If it's any consolation, it's snowing in York too...

*laughs* you drunken bum! We've talked before about Hull, and Spiders! We were both rather drunk at the time though... (i.e. outside the Elsinore in Whiby).

I can't really do drinks after work. I have to go back to York and bath my little girl and put her to bed (evie_petrol). She misses her Daddy if I don't do it. Very rarely I do stay in Leeds. I'll be in touch if I do.

The last time I rode in snow I fell off and it cost me £300 to fix the broken fairing. I'm not risking that kind of expense again!
