She's So Fine Woman, Insect Girl and Grumpy Cybergoth

I get the train from York to Leeds every morning at the moment. An aspect of regular commuter travel is that you start to see the same people every morning, but never speak to them. This leads to a certain amount of fantasy in my mind. I start to attach pet names to various people, and miss them if they're not there.

This happens, to a lesser degree, with people I see at nights out across Yorkshire. A few people stick out in my mind, and I remember them.

My first memorable experience of this was actually years ago in Hull. During the winter I would take the train to York. One morning, a woman who could only be described as "Tall Blonde Rock Goddess in civvies" got on the train. She looked vaguely familiar. She actually worked for BR, and would travel to York with a small gaggle of other BR staff. About that time, there was a song by Thunder called "She's So Fine", which recounts the tale of a man in a railway station waiting room, looking for love, when a rock goddess walked in. It was playing on my personal stereo the first time I saw her. I kinda loved the idea of this woman. Obviously, on the next rock night out in Hull I saw her, and I saw her many times over the following few years. I never spoke to her though. It would have ruined the effect.

When I met [livejournal.com profile] miss_dark recently, I was able to recount details of where I had seen her, dating back to the WGW of April 2003. I had seen her their, at the welcome meeting, and her attire had lead me to calling her "insect girl" in my mind. When I saw her distinctive dress and insectoid bag at later events she just stuck out in my mind (especially when I saw her at breakfast in The Royal Hotel - she looked pretty distinctive there!) Eventually, [livejournal.com profile] mister_ed introduced us at Dark City in Sheffield, and now we're friends. I can how this sometimes makes me sound like a bit of a stalker, though.

Which leads onto the most recent memorable person I don't speak to, or "grumpy cybergoth". I saw him at the rock night at Bradford Rios it was my misfortune to attend some months ago. He has a shaved head, like me, and was wearing black trousers, stompy boots and some form of tight Cyberdog t-shirt. He didn't look very happy at all. "You and me both", I thought. He stood out a lot amongst the long hair, denim and leather of Rios. Later, he seemed to have attracted a mildly cybergoth girlfriend, who he was snuggling a little, so things were looking up. About an hour from the end of the evening, she whispered something in his ear, and wandered off. It had the casual look of "I'm off to the bar/toilet", or similar. But she didn't re-appear. After a while, grumpy cybergoth starts to walk around Rios, obviously looking for her. There's no sign of her. To be honest, I'm looking for her too - he's having a bad enough time as it is. When we leave at 02:20, he's *still* looking for her. Bummers! Not only has he had to suffer a night out at Rios, he's lost his woman!

Since then, I've seen grumpy cybergoth out at various events - he was at The Wendy House on Saturday. He's still not found his woman...
